Revision in E-Way Bill Numbering Format from 1st January 2027

E-Way Bill

Revision in E-Way Bill Numbering Format from 1st January 2027

As per the GST Advisory, due to the large number of E-Way Bills being generated, the existing numbering capacity is expected to be exhausted. Therefore, GSTN has proposed to revise the numbering formats with effect from 1st January 2027, as follows:

  • E-Way Bill Number: Increased from 12 digits to 14 digits.
  • Consolidated E-Way Bill Number: Increased from 10 digits to 11 digits.

All taxpayers, GSPs, ERP/software providers and API integrators are advised to make necessary changes in their applications, APIs, database structures and validation rules to support the revised formats.

The changes will soon be available in the Sandbox environment for testing, and further details will be published on the E-Way Bill Portal. All stakeholders should ensure that their systems are updated before 1st January 2027 to avoid any disruption in E-Way Bill operations.
