57th GST Council Meeting Updates
The 57th GST Council meeting was held on 8 October 2026 in New Delhi under the chairpersonship of Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.The Next-Gen GST reforms recommended in the 56th GST Council meeting mainly focused on simplifying GST rates and reducing tax rates. In the 57th meeting, the Council has recommended several changes to simplify GST registration, return filing, refunds and dispute resolution. It has also recommended changes relating to Input Tax Credit (ITC), exports, movement of goods, penalties and prosecution, along with clarifications on the GST treatment of certain goods and services.
Note: All the below changes are recommendations made in the 57th GST Council meeting held on 8 October 2026. They should not be treated as already implemented merely because they have been recommended.
As expressly mentioned in the PIB press release, the recommendations will be given legal effect through the relevant amendments to the CGST/IGST Acts, GST Rules, notifications and circulars. The applicable effective dates and detailed conditions must therefore be checked against the final legal provisions.
